Windermere, Bowness and the south lakes: The busiest and best-connected corner, with England’s longest lake, the steamers and boat hire at Bowness, and gentler countryside running south to the bay at Grange. Most of the county’s hot tub hotels and apartments are here.

When to go

Summer weekends and school holidays fill Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside, and roads over the passes get busy. Spring and autumn are the walkers’ seasons, with bracken turning gold in October. Winter brings snow on the tops and quiet villages, and a hot tub with a fell view is at its best on a cold, clear evening.

Getting there

The M6 runs down the eastern side of the county, with junctions for Penrith, Kendal and the A591 to Windermere. Trains on the West Coast Main Line stop at Oxenholme and Penrith, with a branch to Windermere, and the Cumbrian Coast line serves the west. Manchester Airport is about two hours away by road.
