When to go

Summer weekends and school holidays fill Windermere, Bowness and Ambleside, and roads over the passes get busy. Spring and autumn are the walkers’ seasons, with bracken turning gold in October. Winter brings snow on the tops and quiet villages, and a hot tub with a fell view is at its best on a cold, clear evening.

Getting there

The M6 runs down the eastern side of the county, with junctions for Penrith, Kendal and the A591 to Windermere. Trains on the West Coast Main Line stop at Oxenholme and Penrith, with a branch to Windermere, and the Cumbrian Coast line serves the west. Manchester Airport is about two hours away by road.

Tips for a hot tub break in Cumbria

  • Lakeside parking in Bowness and Ambleside fills early in summer. Arrive before 10am or use the lake boats and buses between villages.
  • Mountain weather changes fast. Check the fell forecast before any high walk, even if it looks clear in the valley.
  • Hardknott and Wrynose passes are steep, single-track and not for nervous drivers or large cars. Go round by the coast in bad weather.
  • Many hotel spas charge separately or need a slot booked. Check before you arrive if the hot tub is the point of the trip.
