“Hot tub” on a UK listing can mean a tub on your own deck, one tub shared by a whole field of shepherd’s huts, or a whirlpool beside the hotel pool. The listing title rarely tells you which. Here’s how we work it out, and how you can too.
Where it changes by type of stay
Cottages and houses let whole. If the whole place is yours and the hot tub is in its garden, it’s almost always yours as well. The catch is a shared courtyard: a few cottages around one yard sometimes share one tub.
Glamping sites. This is where it varies most. Some sites give every hut or pod its own tub; others have one or two tubs for everyone. At The Secret Garden on the Lizard, only the unit called The Cove has a private tub. At Honeywood Farm in Essex, it’s Hideaway 2.
Lodge and holiday parks. “Hot tub lodges” are usually a premium grade of lodge with a tub on the veranda. Check the lodge grade you’re booking, not just the park, because the same park often sells lodges with and without one.
Hotels. Assume it’s in the spa or leisure club unless a specific room says otherwise. Spa hot tubs are shared, often have set hours, and sometimes have adults-only sessions or an extra charge.
Phrases that usually mean shared
- “On-site hot tub” or “hot tub on site”
- “Access to hot tub” or “use of hot tub”
- “Shared facilities include…”
- “Leisure club”, “wellness area” or “spa facilities”
- “Hot tub available to book”, which usually means a shared tub by the hour
Phrases like “your own hot tub”, “private hot tub” or “hot tub on your deck” are the good ones, but even they are worth a quick check if the place is one of several units on the same site.
Three questions for the owner
- Is the hot tub only for our booking, or shared with other guests?
- Is it ready when we arrive, or do we need to fire it up or book it? Wood-fired tubs can take a couple of hours to heat.
- Is there a charge for it, or any times it’s closed?
How we label it here
Every stay on With A Hot Tub is stamped private or shared. We only mark a tub private when the source shows it belongs to your booking. If it doesn’t say, we call it shared and tell you to check. Where only one room or unit has the tub, we name it. More on how we check.
Want a tub that’s yours alone? Start with hot tub breaks for couples, which only lists private tubs.
