UK hotels and holiday lets use “spa bath”, “jacuzzi”, “whirlpool” and “hot tub” almost interchangeably. They’re very different things to sit in. This guide is about what you’ll actually get, so you can book the right one for the trip you have in mind.
Spa bath (or whirlpool bath)
An indoor bath with jets, usually in the en-suite. You run it fresh, use it, and pull the plug. It’s the usual meaning of “jacuzzi room” or “spa bath suite” in a hotel.
- Good for: winter weekends, couples, anyone who wants warmth without going outside.
- Watch for: “luxury bath” or “freestanding bath” with no mention of jets. That’s just a bath.
The Red Velvet suite near Southend has both: a spa bath inside and its own hot tub on the roof terrace.
Hot tub
A bigger tub, kept full, filtered and heated, usually outside on a deck, terrace or garden. It seats two to six and is ready whenever you are. Most cottage, lodge and glamping tubs are this kind.
- Good for: stargazing, sea views, and groups.
- Watch for: whether it’s yours or the site’s. See is the hot tub private?
Wood-fired hot tub
An outdoor tub heated by a small stove you feed with logs. Common at shepherd’s huts and farm glamping. It’s slower and more hands-on, and many people think it’s the best of the lot.
- Good for: a proper outdoors feel, and couples with an afternoon to spare.
- Watch for: heating time. Some arrive pre-lit, some don’t. Gin and Toffee Carriage near Thaxted says its tub isn’t heated before you arrive; Kilden Hut near Truro supplies a basket of logs. Ask whether logs are included.

Spa or leisure club tub
A hot tub beside the hotel pool, shared with everyone staying. Handy as part of a spa break, but not the private soak a “hotel with hot tub” search usually means. Expect set opening hours, and sometimes age limits or a fee.
Which to book
- Just the two of you, any season: a hotel suite with a spa bath, or a hut with its own tub.
- Outdoors with a view: a hot tub on a terrace or deck. Try hot tubs with a view.
- A group or family: a cottage or house with a garden tub.
- A spa day with a room: a hotel with a hot tub in its leisure club is fine, as long as you know it’s shared.
