Things to do near your hot tub

  • CatbellsA short, steep fell above Derwentwater near Keswick with one of the best views in the Lakes for the effort.
  • Tarn HowsAn easy loop around a tree-fringed tarn near Hawkshead, good with children and in autumn colour.
  • GrasmereWordsworth’s village, with Dove Cottage and the famous gingerbread shop.
  • Coniston WaterHire a boat or ride the steam yacht Gondola, with the Old Man of Coniston above.

When to go

The park is busiest from Easter to the end of the summer holidays, especially around Windermere. May, June and September usually bring the best mix of weather and space. Late autumn and winter are quieter and cheaper, with frost on the fells, and that’s when most people book a hot tub.

Getting there

Drive via the M6 and the A591 from Kendal to Windermere and Ambleside. Trains run to Windermere from Oxenholme on the West Coast Main Line, and buses link Windermere, Ambleside, Grasmere and Keswick. Boats cross and run the length of Windermere.

Tips for a hot tub break in Lake District

  • Book popular pubs and restaurants in Ambleside, Grasmere and Bowness ahead on weekends; they fill even out of season.
  • Pay-and-display car parks are run by the National Trust, the park authority and councils; National Trust members park free at Trust car parks.
  • Phone signal disappears in many valleys. Download maps and your booking details before you set off.
  • If you want the tub to yourself, look for a stay stamped private: many hotel spas here are shared and charge extra for a slot.
